I grew up on a small family ranch, where "land rich, cash poor" wasn't just a saying — it was a way of life. If something was broken, you fixed it, and if you needed something, you built it. My grandfather, a mechanical engineer who'd once held his own contractor's license and built several homes locally, was the center of that world. We built rubber band race cars and kid-sized workbenches together, and when I was 10, I had the privilege of helping him build the large shop on our property — the same shop where my younger brother and I spent years tinkering with woodworking.

Without cable growing up, my TV options were limited to East Coast satellite feeds — so my brother and I grew up watching Bob Vila and This Old House instead of typical kids' programming. Combined with a mechanical mind and years in the high school woodshop, construction wasn't just an interest — it was in my blood.

College was a non-negotiable in my family, a value forged by the struggles of running a small farm, ranch, and orchard. I started in accounting, where math came naturally, but it wasn't until I discovered Construction Management at Chico State that things clicked.

That set me on a 15-year path in commercial construction, working my way up from project engineer to superintendent to preconstruction manager on large institutional and corporate projects across the Bay Area and Sacramento — schools, hospitals, fire stations, lab and clean room facilities, and corporate campuses. That experience made me genuinely comfortable with larger, more complex projects and gave me deep familiarity working with various municipalities — navigating permitting, inspections, and approvals that often intimidate smaller contractors.

But through it all, my roots stayed residential. After 15 years on the commercial side, I got my own license to come back to what started this for me — helping families create a home. It's a bit of a cliché path — grandson learns from grandfather, grows up, comes back to his roots — but cliché or not, it's my story, and I wouldn't trade it.

Today, that's what Bevel Builders is built on. I run this business alongside my continued work in commercial construction management — a balance that lets me stay selective, take on a limited number of projects at a time, and give each one the attention it deserves.
